About the Artist
James Hart Sculptor (b.1952)
"When I'm carving, I go to another place- the land of the spirits."
James Hart, born in Masset, Haidi Gwaii, British Columbia, is a prominent indigenous artist celebrated for his contemporary takes on Haida carvings and sculptures. Hart was raised within the rich cultural traditions of the Haida people, coming from a long line of Haida chiefs who were also carvers.
Hart honed his craft under the guidance and apprenticeship of Robert Davidson and Bill Reid, two prolific Haida carvers. Notable commissions include a replacement pole for Bill Reid at the Museum of Anthropology (2000) and The Three Watchmen, a bronze sculpture that stands outside the National Gallery of Canada (2011).
