About the Artist

Don Gummer Sculptor (b.1946)

"Start by starting. This is what I do."

Don Gummer was born in Louisville, Kentucky, moving to New Haven, Connecticut, to receive his MFA at Yale University in 1970.

Gummer is known primarily for his large-scale, site-specific works, including Primary Compass located at the Butler Institute of American Art and The Optimist displayed outside of the Preston Arts Center in Henderson, Kentucky.

Gummer is noted by critics as a "contemporary constructivist"; his work reflects the ideas of modern industrial society onto contemporary spaces. Gummer utilizes elemental materials such as aluminum and bronze, effectively transforming the natural landscape into a manifestation of contemporary aesthetics.
