About the Artist
Jasper Johns Painter, Sculptor (b.1930)
"I choose one hand, to do both would imply I was doing nothing."
Jasper Johns is one of the most significant American Painters in contemporary art, inspiring generations of new art movements with his works White Flag, Flag, and Three Flags.
Johns attended three semesters at University of South Carolina at Columbia, then one semester at Parsons School of Design in New York.
In 1951, Johns was drafted into the Korean War, serving two years in South Carolina and Japan. Johns' service informed his work, reflecting the layers of meaning embedded within daily life, challenging conventional representation and prompting reflection on the nature of art and its relationship to the world around us.
