"There are memories and knowledge that your hands have stored that cannot be accessed through your eyes."
Eric Fischl is an American painter, sculptor, and educator. He received his BFA from the California Institute for the Arts in 1972.
Born and raised in the suburbs of Long Island, New York, Fischl’s youth profoundly impacted the subject matter he explores in his works. Most notably, Fischl’s work popularized the dark undercurrents of suburban America, revealing the nuanced complexities beneath its seemingly idyllic surface.
Fischl received the Guild Hall's Academy of the Art’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 and has since become a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2006).
